Sign Language Numbers

Learning the American sign language numbers is really simple and lots of fun too.

The numbers in sign language, like the language itself, originate from French sign language. All ASL numbers are represented using only one hand, up until 999 that is, 1,000 + you are required to use two hands.

The numbers 1 – 9 maintain (for the most part) their singular form through out the whole numbering system. Incraments of 10’s (being 10, 20, 30 and so on) are represented by slight changes in the way the numeric values 1 – 9 are shown. The values of a thousand, a million and so on each have the same hand movement but are signed with slight changes in the hand shape.

Individuals young and old have been able to learn the ASL number system within a resonably short amount of time. Use the chart at the bottom of this page to begin practicing immediatly.
