There are many reasons an individual may want to Learn Sign Language. Maybe you want to develop a relationship with someone you know who is Deaf. Some mothers want to teach their babies sign to help them communicate and express their feelings. Maybe you want to learn sign language to become a professional sign language interpreter.

Whatever the reason is that makes you interested in learning sign language language, there is one very important thing that you need to know. It takes time! Be patient with yourself, be patient with the Deaf people you hangout with as they are being patient with you. It has been said that it can take even a very motivated individual roughly 2 years to fully comprehend the grammar, structure and culture associated with sign language. If you truly want to learn sign language then you need to be ready to work hard, totally emerce yourself and be patient.

If you really want to learn sign language there are many avenues you may take. Some Deaf schools offer free sign language classes for their students parents and you may find that they are willing to help you too. Lots of colleges have American Sign Language courses you can enroll in. If you have a Deaf friend, co-worker or family member you could ask them to help you. One of the best ways to learn Sign Language is be immersing yourself in the language. Go to Deaf gatherings and don’t be shy. You know what they say – “practice, practice, practice”. The Deaf world is a fantastic place and you need to learn ASL before you can go there and meet lots of wonderful people.
